Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Pheasant Ridge Elementary School

The PBIS system includes four main components: expectations, incentives and rewards, consequences and celebrations.

Our expectations are summed up in our PBIS pledge: Be safe.  Be respectful.  Be here and be ready. Our staff spends time during the first week of school teaching students what that means through expectations for behavior in all areas of our school: classrooms and other instructional areas, the bathrooms, the playground, the lunchroom, the hallway and the areas for arrival and dismissal.  These specific expectations are listed on the next 2 pages.  The expectations are reviewed throughout the school year, are posted throughout the building and are re-taught after long breaks in the school calendar.

The PBIS program includes rewards for our students. They receive Bee Bucks when a staff member notices they are following our expectations and behaving properly at school.  Students collect their Bee Bucks and get to spend them like money on our Bee Buck Redemption Days.   They bring their Bee Bucks and buy small items that they may keep.  The Bee Buck Store includes fancy pencils, novelty erasers, notebooks, gel pens, playing cards, etc.  Some items cost more Bee Bucks and children may choose to save their Bee Bucks until they have earned and saved enough to buy a special item.  If you work for a company or store that would like to donate some items for our Bee Buck Store, please contact Mrs. Horne, our assistant principal.

This year classes will also have an opportunity to earn rewards together at lunch time. That reward will be earned with good behavior in the lunchroom.  Classes that reach their goal will earn a special reward, like indoor recess in the computer lab, for instance.

Consequences exist for students who do not follow our behavior expectations in school.  When a student does not behave properly or follow our expectations they are given reminders.  When a verbal reminder does not work, staff members will give a student a Minor.  Minors are formal reminders that they need to follow our expectations and behave properly.  If a student receives three minors he/she will automatically get a MAJOR.

A Major, also called an Office Discipline Referral, requires that the student go to the principal or assistant principal’s office.  The principal or assistant principal will talk with the student and get a complete picture of the situation before determining a consequence for the problem behavior.  Both the parents and the teacher will be notified of the consequence.

Serious problem behaviors will result in an automatic MAJOR without getting three minors first.  Those serious behaviors include, but are not limited to stealing, lying, cheating, vandalism, fighting, threatening, vandalism, possession of any weapons at school and major disruptions or major disrespect.

Students who receive more than one major will receive direct help in improving their behavior at school.  Parents are often involved in providing that help.

Celebrations: At Pheasant Ridge Primary School we are very proud of our students and the effort they put into good behavior and learning!   We celebrate the success of our entire school as well as individual students who work hard to improve their behavior and reach academic goals.  This year we will hold monthly assemblies and quarterly special activities to celebrate our successes together!
