About Special Services
Queen Bee School District Special Education Services
Queen Bee School District 16 offers a full continuum of special education and related services to students found eligible for special education. To the maximum extent appropriate, each child is educated with children who are not disabled. The district strives to have all children educated in their home school and embeds inclusive practices into all our schools. Special classes, separate schooling, or other placements by which students with disabilities are removed from the regular education environment should occur only if the student's Individual Educational Program (“IEP”) team determines that the nature or severity of the disability is such that education in a regular classroom setting, even with the use of supplemental aids and services, cannot be achieved satisfactorily.
Students with disabilities who do not qualify for an individualized education program under the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, may qualify for services under Section 504 of the federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 if the student (1) has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, (2) has a record of a physical or mental impairment, or (3) is regarded as having a physical or mental impairment. To inquire about the identification, assessment, and placement of students, contact Michele Bonham, Director of Student Services at 630-344-5601 or 1525 Bloomingdale Road, Glendale Heights, IL 60139.
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) provides a wealth of resources for parents of students with disabilities. Visit this site to access the Special Education Parent pages and this link to read the Special Education Parent Guide Handbook developed by ISBE.
Interpreter Services
Public school districts are required to take whatever action is necessary to facilitate a parent or guardian’s understanding of and participation in IEP and Section 504 meetings. This includes the provision of interpreter services for parents/guardians whose native language is not English or a sign language interpreter for parents/guardians who are deaf or hard of hearing. In the absence of qualified interpreters on staff, school districts may use outside vendors, including telephonic interpreters. Parents/guardians have the right to request that an interpreter provided by the school district serve no other role during an IEP or Section 504 meeting, and the school district must make reasonable efforts to comply with that request. To request an interpreter contact your child’s case manager or the building principal.
