Individualized Education Program

The IEP is a written document for a child with a disability who is eligible for special education services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).  The IEP is developed, reviewed, and revised at least annually by the student’s IEP team.  At a minimum, the IEP team includes a special education teacher, a general education teacher, the parent, the child, and the LEA representative (Local Education Agency).

The following are some of the components of the IEP that are discussed during an IEP meeting:

  • Parental Input
  • Present levels of academic and functional performance (PLOP)
  • Measurable annual goals and benchmarks or short term objectives
  • Description of how the child’s progress will be monitored and reported
  • Educational accommodations and supports
  • Extent the child will participate with nondisabled peers
  • Participation in statewide and district-wide assessments
  • Dates, frequency, location, and duration of special education and related services
  • A statement regarding eligibility for the extended school year (ESY) services

The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) provides a wealth of resources for parents of students with disabilities. Visit this site to access the Special Education Parent pages and this link to read the Special Education Parent Guide Handbook developed by ISBE.
