    LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

Welcome to Queen Bee School District 16 and the 2019-2020 School Year.  We are excited for our students to return so that we can continue our journey together.  Queen Bee School District 16 has been providing an excellent education for the students of this community since 1860, and we remain committed to fostering a school community where our students can Learn, Grow, and Achieve.  As the oldest district in continuous operation in DuPage County, Illinois, we are as proud of our traditions as we are of our ability to meet the needs of our ever-changing community.

As you know, we have invested considerable time and energy, making significant improvements in our instructional program, and we are proud of the results that our students have earned.  Our students continue to score well on the Illinois Assessment for Readiness (IAR) and the ACCESS tests. More importantly, our students continue to improve. Last year we experienced a significant increase in the number of students who successfully passed the ACCESS test, which is a priority for our community, as we serve students from 48 different language backgrounds.  We were fortunate enough to have our efforts validated by Cobblestone Research Partners, an independent education research organization, as they found significant improvements in the performance of our students who are learning English as a second language over the past three years.

Our students continue to excel in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) courses that we offer at every grade level.  This summer almost 100 of our students participated in our first Summer STEM Camp, and our Robotics teams continue to enjoy success in competition.  This year we will be seeking the Distinguished STEM District designation through our partners at Project Lead The Way as a result of our implementation of our STEM program at all grade levels and for every student in the district.

Our teachers and administrators have worked hard over the summer to make some improvements in the areas of parent communication and grading practices.  We have implemented Skyward as our primary database and student management system. Skyward was selected because it offered the best opportunity for our teachers, students, parents, and administrators to work from one platform for registration, grade reporting, fee payment, participation in the meal program among many other features.  We are new to the system and off to a good start. I would ask for your patience as we work through this implementation, and we would appreciate your feedback about this program as we go forward.

We also made some progress in the area of grade reporting and assessment that you will be hearing more about from your principals and teachers.  The work in this area was intended to align our assessment practices to the standards that we teach and to ensure that student report cards accurately reflect the progress and performance of our students.

Last year, we began the dialogue around Queen Bee 2020 and are grateful for all of the community input and support.  Queen Bee 2020 is our comprehensive plan to reorganize the district for the purposes of improving the quality of our educational program, decreasing the traffic in our community created by arrival and dismissal procedures, and to use our resources more efficiently.  We continue to study our options within this plan. I anticipate that our Board of Education will take action on this plan in the fall. You can read more about Queen Bee 2020 on our website at www.queenbee16.org and feel free to contact me at superintendent@queenbee16.org if you have questions or input to share.

Our team of educators and support personnel are excited to get started, and we are looking forward to the return of our students.  Your input and feedback are critical to our continued improvement and success with your child. Please feel free to communicate with your child’s teacher and administrative team on a regular basis so that we can continue to foster a strong partnership with each family whom we serve.

It is an honor to serve our Board of Education and this community as your superintendent.  Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have questions, concerns, or insights to share.

    Best,
