Remote Learning: Letter from the Superintendent
Dear Queen Bee 16 Families,
Today all of our teachers, educational support personnel and administrators participated in training and resource review to prepare for tomorrow, which will be our first day of our Remote Learning Contingency Plan (RLCP). The RLCP is our effort to provide the best education possible for our students within the constraints that we are confronted with. I want to take a moment to provide you with an overview of our RLCP and direct you to our website, queenbee16.org, for any questions that you may have as we prepare to launch. Of course, feel free to email or contact your teacher or building administrator if you need more information than our website provides.
A team of instructional coaches, teachers, and administrators began working on our RLCP several weeks ago when it appeared that the closure of our schools was imminent. Over the course of weeks, we have prepared a plan, standardized resources, and established communication channels for students, parents, teachers, and administrators so that we can engage our students in a meaningful education during the period of closure. You can view the entire plan and all resources at queenbee16.org/remotelearning.
At its core, our plan is to conduct a virtual school day between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on each school day. Our teachers will be at their computers and ready to respond via email throughout this time and maybe messaged through Schoology, Google classroom, and other available communication applications that are already in use. We have also established a Technology Helpdesk that you can reach on the web at helpdesk@queenbee16.org or via phone at (630) 344-5606. The Technology Helpdesk is intended to support the more than 1400 Chromebooks that have been issued to students and 200 that we have issued to faculty and staff members.
We have also taken this opportunity to expand the number of licenses for critical programs like Successmaker, which our students work with each day independently to improve the Math skills. Our teachers are new to this delivery model but are confident in our preparation and they are committed to making the best of this opportunity.
We have taken the first major steps to address the potential need to provide meals for our students during this period of Remote Learning. We were able to secure Meal Packs for students who qualify for Federal Free or Reduced Meal Program and those families will be receiving correspondence that addresses the contents of the Meal Packs and the times that they can be picked up. We are working with neighboring districts and our foodservice partners to develop a more comprehensive Lunch Program to be deployed in the event that the school closures are prolonged. You will be updated as we develop a clearer picture of food availability and our capacity to distribute.
We believe that it is important to do our best to contribute to the continuity of operations in our community and in the lives of the students and families with whom we partner. We will attempt to confirm the participation of each student each day and to establish regular communication with each family during this period of Remote Learning. We have put considerable time, though, and attention to our RLCP and believe that we can support our students in this manner. We also know that this is a new challenge and I ask for both your patience and partnership as we seek to make continuous improvements to the education that we provide to our students. We do not yet know how long we will need to rely on our RLCP as the situation is evolving. It is our hope that the measures that we take now and continued vigilance of the public health professionals will lead to a degree of safety that will allow us to return to our traditional model of education. I will provide updates from my office as we learn more.
Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or principal with any concerns that you may have or with insights that you think may be helpful to share. As always, feel free to contact me personally if I can be of assistance. I thank you in advance for your continued support of our schools and community.
Sincerely,
Joseph R. Williams Ed. D.
